One of the most beloved home computers of the 1980s is making an official comeback. YouTube creator Christian ‘Perifractic’ Simpson has acquired the iconic Commodore brand (including 47 remaining trademarks) in its entirety and, together with the community, is launching the Commodore 64 Ultimate: a modern machine that stays true to the breadbox design but is completely revamped on the inside.

Simpson initially tried to secure exclusive usage rights to the Commodore name, but ultimately went all-in: he bought the entire brand package. This gave him the freedom to set up a fan-driven relaunch and now officially unveil a new Commodore model.

The Commodore 64 Ultimate looks just as you remember it, but runs on contemporary hardware. Instead of relying solely on software emulation, the project opts for an AMD/Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA to recreate the original C64’s behavior as accurately as possible. Under the hood: 128MB DDR2 RAM and 16MB NOR Flash.

Compatibility was at the top of the wish list. According to the team, the system should work with about 99% of existing C64 games and peripherals. Even the classic Datasette interface is supported, so original cassette decks can be used again. No physical media? You can simulate cassettes and floppies using files on a USB stick.

Retro on the inside, modern on the outside: the Ultimate features an HDMI port with simulated PAL/NTSC timing (1080p @ 50 or 60 Hz), plus optional scanline effects for those seeking authentic CRT vibes. Other connections include: 3×USB-A 2.0, USB-C, 3.5mm headphone jack, optical S/PDIF, MicroSD slot, and 100Mb/s Ethernet. Wireless networks are supported; specific Wi-Fi details have yet to be announced.

Emulation extends to expansion modules, multiple SID chip configurations, memory expansions, and network functionality, so both purists and tinkerers can enjoy themselves.

While the iconic layout remains, the new C64 types very differently: it uses Gateron Pro 3.0 mechanical switches with RGB lighting and an actuation force of 55 grams. Retro look, modern comfort.

Preorders are now open. The base version starts at €299.59 (excluding VAT and shipping). There will also be a ‘Starlight’ edition with a transparent/clear case and LED accents, and a premium ‘Founders Edition’ in transparent gold, featuring a 24-carat gold badge and satin gold keys.

Delivery is currently scheduled for October/November 2025, but the team is cautious: delays are possible.

Every order includes a USB stick shaped like a classic Commodore cassette. It comes loaded with more than 50 licensed games, music tracks, and demos, plus 64 GB of storage for your own collection.
