Cork Institute of Technology (CIT), has announced that its Masters in Cloud Computing has attracted over 200 applicants since the course was launched. The course, a world first, was originally planned to offer only 20 places.
From September to January the course was theory based. But in January the students began the practical side of the course which required them to be building and operating virtualised system using Cisco technology to complete assignments and log in and interact with live lectures and tutorials. Classes are also recorded so participants can access at a later time if they are unable to attend in real time.
"CIT needed to implement a new virtual desktop infrastructure to provide online teaching for this new Masters in Cloud Computing. It needed to be built on a foundation that could accommodate long term growth and support objectives for e-learning leadership. The goal was to deliver anytime, anywhere learning accessibility. We selected Cisco’s UCS for these reasons," said Gerard Culley (IT Manager, CIT). "Cost was a major consideration, of course, but we were also looking for a solution that could rapidly deliver in terms of breadth and scale."
"Designed to be delivered remotely or on campus, the 18-month course addresses future industry skills requirements and strengthens Ireland’s advancement as an international Cloud Computing Centre of Excellence," commented Finnbarr Nolan, DC Design Architect, PlanNet21 Communications, which was Cisco’s delivery partner on the project.
As well as the 200 students who have signed up for the course, 80 additional students have joined recently under the Government re-skilling programme. These are technical qualified individuals who are looking for reskilling in ICT and cloud technology.
