Acer 11 CB3-131 Chromebook

Chromebooks have found their niche as entry-level notebooks for students and this model from Acer is about as afforable as it gets. The CB-131 runs Chrome OS, has an Intel Celeron processor, 2Gb RAM and 16Gb of storage.

Price: €239

HP Envy 15

HP’s VR-certified Omen gaming laptops occupy the premium end of the market, but if you want to avoid a four-figure price tag, the Envy 15 is a capable substitute.

The Envy 15 boasts a choice of HD or 4K touch screens, Intel Core i7 processors, up to 16Gb DDR4 RAM, 1Tb storage and up to seven hours battery life.

Google Chromecast Ultra

There’s really no excuse not to have a Chromecast in your home at this stage. The latest version handles 4K content and conects seamlessly with everything from YouTube to Spotify. Still no sign of RTE Player and Amazon Prime compatibility but, at least for the former, it’s only a matter of time.

Price: €79

Philips EverPlay BT7900

If you’re looking for a portable Bluetooth speaker with a bit of punch then Philips has something that’s nice to look at and holds its own on sound quality. You’ll find similar options from Sony and Beats but for value alone we’d recommend this more wallet-frienly option.

Price: €99

XBox One S

The PlayStation 4 is pummelling Microsoft’s Xbox on the sales front and Redmond did itself no favours by pitching a home entertainment solution over a pure gaming machine. The marketing for the One S suggests lessons have been learned and the focus has shifted to a massive catalogue of 1,300 games and the addition of 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and 4K video streaming.
Beware, it can run a little hot when taxed so put it somewhere with decent ventilation.

Price: From €249

Playstation VR Starter Package

Our choice of VR system rests in the middle of the market – from a price perspective, at least. The package formerly known as ‘Project Morpheus’ comes with a headset, tracking camera and headphones. If you have some extra change you might also consider a set of motion controllers or an ‘aim controller’ for first-person shooters.

Price: €550

Lenovo Tablet 3 Pro

Pitched as ‘the ultimate entertainment tablet’, the Yoga Tab 3 Pro has a 10.1″ 2560×1600 pixel display, 4Gb RAM and a 64Gb hard drive. Where it sets itself apart is its built-in projector capable of delivering 178″ images. It comes in a choice of black, two shades of gold and brown.

Kindle Paperwhite

This year’s Kindle Paperwhite comes with a 6″ screen, 4Gb of memory and weighs only 210g. If you want an alternative we can recommend the Kobo Aura 2, which has the same size screen and costs €10 less. The main difference is which store you want to be connected to.

Price: €139.99

Kaiser Baas Alpha Drone Plus
Originally priced at €199, we recommend doing a bit of a shop around. We found this nice little number online for much less than the original price tag. Recommended for anyone looking to push their flying skills.

Price: €99
