OpenAI plans to make money from searches related to products and e-commerce. The company wants to forward orders to online stores and charge a commission in return.

In addition to selling subscriptions, seller commissions could become the next revenue model for the AI company.

Currently, Sam Altman’s company already displays products that match search queries, including links to suppliers and shops.

The latest indication of this comes from sources at the Financial Times. They report that ChatGPT wants to integrate an e-commerce system with its own checkout. This is a model also used by Google and TikTok in the US, where they process as much of the transaction as possible on their own platforms.

OpenAI’s move poses a threat to Google’s business model, as consumers are increasingly turning to AI chatbots to perform searches and discover products.

E-commerce platform Shopify has been a search and data partner of OpenAI since last spring. Online stores that are not on Shopify can submit a request to have their products included in OpenAI’s shopping results. Unlike Google, OpenAI does not ask for an XML product feed, but simply the web address of the shop.
