Trintech Group has launched what it claims is the payment industry’s first commercially available GPRS point-of-sale (POS) terminal product.

The Compact POS terminal range allows businesses to use mobile operators’ latest high-speed wireless networks to process transactions quickly and manage remote application downloads. The new product is targeted at operators of prepaid top-up networks that are using new terminal networks and companies that are managing terminals for credit and debit card transactions.

The terminal is designed to simply plug into a power source. Because GPRS systems use a high speed always-on data link and the fast printer, Trintech claims transaction times are now down to an average of 8s. Two-way communication between the terminals and network operators means that new applications and configurations can be remotely downloaded. The new terminal uses IP (Internet Protocol) messaging, allowing e-mail type messages to be sent to the merchant’s terminal.
