The fans’ fury seen in the letters pages of national newspapers and heard on the airwaves has, of course, made its way to the Internet, where some NTL customers are organising a protest at Bringbackeurosport.com

The Website gives a basic outline of the situation and charts the developments, including media attention and responses from NTL. Protesters are urged to write to NTL, the Office of the Director of Telecommunications Regulation (ODTR) and the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland to express their opposition to the move. An online petition is also circulating, with more than 2,000 signatures.

Messages of protest have also been posted on Bringbackeurosport.8m.com.

In its defence, NTL claims the decision was made after focus group customer research revealed there was a preference for a dedicated business channel. The research, the existence of which has been question by irate customers, was carried out by Catalyst Research Consultants and MRBI.

Judging by the company’s response, it is unlikely that the decision will be reversed any time soon. ‘CNBC will be there for as long as it is relevant,’ said Sandra Eaton, PR executive with NTL, adding that the situation would be reviewed if the channel failed to get an audience.

‘We have to provide a package that appeals to a broader audience. It’s not going to appeal to everybody all of the time.’

There is a ray of hope for NTL’s digital customers — there have been reports that both parties are discussing a spot on the digital package.
