Irish Wi-Fi network operator Bitbuzz has announced operating figures for the first half of 2010 revealing a total of 271,272 registered users by the end of June, an increase of 25% in registered users in the first half of 2010.

Over the past 12 months Bitbuzz has experienced a 56% increase in registered users, a positive result for the wholly-owned Irish telecoms company, particularly during tough economic times. The total number of Bitbuzz Wi-Fi hotspots across the country at the end of June 2010 was 223 up from 204 at the end of 2009. Bitbuzz registered an average of 21 logins per site per business day, up from 11 logins per site per business day at the end of 2009, with the busiest time of day being from 6pm to 7pm.

Shane Deasy, managing director, Bitbuzz said: “We are very happy with the figures for the first half of this year and over the past 12 months. We are delighted to be experiencing continued growth. The Wi-Fi index reached an all-time high in June, reflecting strong growth in usage in our daytime Wi-Fi venues and 3 Star hotels. On the basis of activity during the current quarter, we are confident that this trend will continue, particularly with the increased popularity of smartphones and netbooks.”

It is expected that the arrival of more mobile devices like the iPad and tablet PCs will further promote the use of wireless Internet connections across the country.
