BBC director general Mark Thompson has told attendees of the Financial Times Digital Media & Broadcasting Conference that the BBC’s iPlayer video streaming service will be available worldwide in 2011, with a subscription fee of less than $10 per month.

The Guardian reports Thompson’s said that the British government broadcaster’s iPad application will definitely launch this year with a cost of “a small number of dollars per month, definitely less than 10.”

Australians accessing the BBC iPlayer application would likely gain access to BBC content before it is shown on the local ABC television channel, due to the delays involved in broadcasting international content. These shows are often later available on the ABC’s iView catch-up TV offering, putting the two services in competition with each other once the iPlayer becomes available worldwide.

International subscribers to the BBC iPlayer application on the iPad will also be able to access an archive of BBC content, and video from other British broadcasters like ITV and Five.
