When you throw your hat in the ring for election to public office, you must expect in return a certain level of scrutiny – the higher the office, the wider and deeper the scrutiny.

Perhaps Sarah Palin did not expect that scrutiny to come from members of the hacking community who recently cracked web mail accounts belonging to her, sending some of what they found to the famous dirty linen line, Wikileaks.

While hacking someone’s e-mail is not to be condoned, the affair has highlighted a number of issues. Palin has been criticised in the past for using web mail to go outside of official communication channels, while in public office. That’s fine if she is keeping it light and outside of official business, but two of the accounts that she was alleged to have used are gov.palin@yahoo.com and gov.sarah@yahoo.com, which don’t bode well.
