The UK needs more nuclear power to power its growing AI industry, Matt Garman, CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS). In an interview with BBC. Garman said nuclear power is ideal for data centres because it provides continuously available, carbon-free power.

Garman emphasised that AWS is taking long-term planning for its energy needs. “We are investing ahead,” he said. before going on to say he expected nuclear power to play a key role in the next decade.

Both Amazon and Microsoft are investing billions in data centre expansions because of the AI boom. AWS itself plans to spend $83 billion through 2025, while Microsoft has readied itself for a spend of $80 billion. Recently, AWS paused some data centre lease negotiations because of economic uncertainty in the US.

Still, the company stands by its expansion plans. “This is routine capacity management,” explained an AWS spokesman. The commitment to nuclear power should support that growth in a sustainable way.

AI’s growing energy needs call for innovative cooling methods. Intel and Shell recently introduced a certified liquid cooling solution for data centres. This combines Intel’s Xeon processors with Shell’s cooling fluids.

According to analysts, liquid cooling will account for 36% of revenue in data centre cooling by 2028. This method surpasses traditional air cooling in performance.

AWS competitor, Microsoft, announced it will increase its European data centre capacity by 40% over the next two years. The company is expanding in 16 European countries.

Microsoft aims to develop an ‘AI and cloud ecosystem’ in Europe, focusing on digital resilience, data privacy, cyber security and economic competitiveness.
