Apple’s newest iPhone, the 3G S will be available for purchase in Ireland on 26 June, the company announced yesterday. It is up to twice as fast as the iPhone 3G with a longer battery life and boasts over 100 new features. It will be available in 16Gb and 32Gb models.
Older models featured a camera lens, but the iPhone 3G S will contain a 3 megapixel camera that can be auto-focused with a double tap and manipulated to adjust exposure, colour, and contrast. It will also record video that can be cut down and sent via email, MMS (multimedia messaging service), or posted to MobileMe and YouTube.
The operating system, iPhone OS 3.0, will enhance both new and old applications in dozens of ways. Users can now cut, copy, and paste text and images. MMS makes sending photos and video through the phone service possible. Spotlight Search locates any file, song, or text throughout the entire iPhone, from mail to music. Users can switch to a landscape-oriented keyboard for easier two-handed typing. Parental controls to can be applied to video and applications. Voice Memo will tape audio messages for storing or sending.
A built-in Compass makes navigation with the iPhone, which already features Google Maps, easier than ever. Compass will not only point North and give exact coordinates, it will reorient the position of a map according to the direction the user faces. For those who have lost their iPhone, MobileMe can help to locate it using the GPS coordinates in the iPhone.
Voice control has also been enhanced in the iPhone OS 3.0 software, with an extended range of commands for placing calls, shuffling through music, and identifying artists or tracks. It is also a useful tool for users with sight disabilities, as well as a number of features. The screen’s appearance can be adjusted through zoom and contrast, or else VoiceOver can be employed to read the screen’s content and options out loud to the user.
iPhone OS 3.0 allows applications to load faster than ever, while the utilisation of the OpenGL ES 2.0 standard makes for intense 3D graphics. In addition, it can support 7.2 Mbps HSDPA for connecting to wireless networks even faster.
iPhone OS 3.0, will be available for download from the Apple website starting 17 June as an upgrade to those who own an older generation iPhone or iPod Touch.
