Apple CEO Tim Cook has hinted at an upcoming product launch this week with his simple but powerful message, “This week.” This subtle teaser is enough to reinforce speculation that a new MacBook model is coming, especially considering that the MacBook Air M4 has been rumoured to be on the market all year.

The anticipation surrounding this launch is reminiscent of Steve Jobs’ iconic announcement of the original MacBook Air in 2008. Jobs said then, “Something is in the air,” which echoes Cook’s current phrasing and emphasises an ‘Air’ device.

Although Cook has not explicitly confirmed the MacBook Air M4, his statement strongly suggests that this is the product in question. Some speculate that Apple could unveil two new Air devices this week, but a recent report by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman indicates that the M4 MacBook Air is more likely to launch. Gurman cites dwindling inventories and preparations for a Mac-related announcement within days, strengthening expectations for an upcoming release.

It is less likely that a new iPad Air will be announced alongside the MacBook Air M4, as the sixth generation iPad Air was not released until May 2024. Rumours of an ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air are also unfounded at this time, as the iPhone 17 series is expected to be unveiled later in the year during Apple’s traditional autumn event.

Given the short notice and lack of fanfare prior to the event, it is very likely that the announcement will be made via a release on Apple’s website, similar to the recent unveiling of the iPhone 16e. Despite the lack of a major event, this launch is significant for one of Apple’s flagships.

The M4 chip has already proven its power in other devices such as the iPad Pro and the base model of the MacBook Pro M4, so there are high expectations for the performance of the MacBook Air M4. It is widely predicted that the MacBook Air M4 will become a popular choice among consumers looking for a new MacBook.
