Apple makes concessions to competitors after EU pressure

Cupertino presents idea to give competitors look at how NFC payments system works

There has been much criticism of the way Apple shields its own systems from other companies. Last year, it was criticised by the European competition authority for restricting competitors’ access to its tap-and-go technology but that situation may about to change.

Apple Pay’s propietary system technology is based on ear field communication (NFC), which allows instant information exchange between two devices that are in close proximity.

Apple’s proposal to open up Apple Pay has yet to be considered by the European Commission. It will also have to be presented to its competitors and customers before being accepted or rejected by the EU, three people close to the matter told the news agency.

If this proposal turns out to be true, it is an interesting move by Apple. It shows that the tech giant is determined to meet European requirements and is thus making an effort to comply with its regulations. It must be said time is not on Apple’s side.

Compromising on details rather than simply opening up the ecosystem as the EU wants seems to be the US giant’s strategy.
