Apple has been quietly updating its Maps app as it works hard to keep CEO Tim Cook’s promise to improve the widely criticised service, and has also updated its official Apple Store app.
An update for Maps this week brought significant improvements to the service in Japan, including toll road notifications, improved pronunciation of roads during turn-by-turn navigation, updated icons, labels for freeways, transit stations, subway lines, hospitals, fire stations and more, and new 3D buildings.
Elsewhere, as listed by The Loop’s Jim Dalrymple, Apple has added Flyover support for 16 cities, including Glasgow, and has expanded Flyover coverage for many more cites including London.
Apple has also updated 3D buildings for Standard view and turn-by-turn navigation for 12 cities, including Birmingham, Dublin, London and Manchester.
China has also received updates similar to Japan’s Apple Maps, with a new colour scheme, improved Chinese character font, re-prioritised locations and updated road information.
