Colaiste na Toirbhirte
For: iOS, Android
Colaiste na Toirbhirte in Bandon is taking communication to the next level with a ground breaking new mobile app designed to help students, parents and staff keep in touch with the school.
The app provides students, parents and staff with a single, secure point of contact for communicating with the school. Users create a personalised account before they can access school services, adding an extra layer of security and tailoring the user experience to their needs.
The app supports push notifications that allow the school to send alerts and important updates. Other features include a live, updatable school calendar; a section for the Parents’ Association; anti-bullying information for students; and updates about extracurricular activities.
Finally, there’s a section with information about on-going local and national competitions, including Young Social Innovators; the AIB Build a Bank Challenge; Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur; LASC Maths Challenge; Gaisce; the BT Young Scientists Exhibition and many more.

iVoter
For: iOS, Android
Developed by Kilkenny-based Pin Point Alerts, iVoter, aims to bridge the gap between political candidates and the public by allowing election candidates to share their manifestos, social media feeds, videos and campaign updates. Currently, the app is not restricted by campaigning moratoriums and the option for voters to receive push notifications from candidates is also available.
The app was used in the UK General Election where details of over 3,000 candidate profiles from across Northern Ireland, Wales, Scotland and England were available.
It will also be trialled here in the Carlow-Kilkenny by-election, where it will be used by all 13 candidates.

Bleep
For: iOS
BitTorrent’s anonymous peer-to-peer messaging app Bleep is now available on iOS after almost a year of testing.
You don’t need to sign up to use Bleep. Like the chat rooms of the olden Internet days, all you have to do is pick a screenname to get started. You can verify your e-mail address and phone number with the app to help people discover and add you in the app, or you can share your Bleep key out to trusted friends. BitTorrent doesn’t use the cloud or store your messages, photos, or data.
BitTorrent has been working on Bleep for quite some time, and has already built out a solid messaging app that includes free voice calling with end-to-end encryption. With iOS, the company is rolling out a new Snapchat-like feature, Whisper, which introduces disappearing messages to the already secure app. You can switch between ephemeral and standard messages as you see fit, even in the same thread if you want.
BitTorrent put some screenshot protections in place just in case your contacts don’t understand the point of a disappearing message. If someone tries to screenshot your whispered message, they won’t be able to capture your nickname – it’s blurred out. If they want to see your nickname, tapping the eye icon will blur out the message and unblur the name, so the two can never be viewed simultaneously.
