Amazon makes last-minute bid to acquire TikTok’s US business
TikTok’s fate in the US hangs by a thread as the April deadline approaches, which requires the popular social media platform to relinquish its Chinese ownership or face a ban. Amid this uncertainty, Amazon has reportedly made a last-minute bid to take over TikTok’s US operations. The offer was reportedly made via a letter to US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick.
TikTok has publicly maintained that it is not for sale because of possible opposition from the Chinese government. The platform has 170 million US users and plays an important role in digital commerce. Meanwhile, negotiations continue in Washington over TikTok’s ownership. National security concerns stemming from the app’s ties to China led to legislation being passed last year mandating its sale by parent company Bytedance.
The Supreme Court unanimously upheld the law on appeal, although President Trump delayed its implementation until 15 April. Crucially, the success of any takeover attempt is dependent on whether ByteDance is willing to relinquish control.
Amazon’s interest comes at a time when other potential buyers are emerging, including Zoop, a start-up founded by OnlyFans creator Tim Stokely; AppLovin, a mobile technology company; Silver Lake; Oracle; and private equity firm Blackstone.
