Amazon confirms mass layoffs: 16,000 jobs gone
Amazon announced on Wednesday that it will cut 16,000 jobs worldwide in what is the company’s second major round of layoffs in three months. The layoffs are part of a wider reorganisation to address post-pandemic overcapacity and increase artificial intelligence (AI) adoption within the company.
Reuters reported last week that Amazon was planning a second round of layoffs as part of a strategy to reduce around 30,000 positions in total. The layoffs are expected to affect employees within various parts of the company, including Amazon Web Services (AWS), retail, Prime Video and human resources departments.
In October last year, Amazon had laid off 14,000 office workers, with CEO Andy Jassy emphasising that the company wanted to reduce operational layers and the number of managers.
Although these 30,000 positions represent only a small portion of Amazon’s more than 1.5 million employees, it amounts to about 10% of the corporate workforce, which is estimated to number about 350,000.
Amazon said it will continue to evaluate plans and may make further adjustments as needed.
