Alcatel has installed a LAN and wireless LAN (WLAN) solution in the new head office of the Marine Institute, at Oranmore in Galway. The installation was carried out by Alcatel business partners NextiraOne and PFH Technology Group, and gives the Marine Institute a secure network infrastructure with a highly resilient backbone capable of supporting all types of traffic – including VoIP – for more than 200 users.

The institute has deployed a solution based on Alcatel’s OmniSwitch 6800 series product set, which delivers triple-speed Ethernet as well as primary and secondary ten gigabit connectivity through the network’s core backbone. In addition, the institute required a complementary WLAN solution to support more than 100 remote workers, which uses Alcatel’s OmniAccess technology to provide a continuously available wireless network.

The institute evaluated solutions from several leading vendors but opting for Alcatel’s OmniSwitch solution due to its security features and ease of management, allowing the organisation to minimise operational costs.

Spearheading the sustainable development of Ireland’s 220 million acre marine resource, the Marine Institute places particular reliance on electronic communications of all kinds and on the the easy transfer of data between locations. When the decision was made to relocate its centre of operations to Galway, it was essential that IT and communications facilities remained linked to the other Institute locations.

NextiraOne and PFH Technology Group carried out the installation with minimal disruption to the institute’s work. Both Alcatel partners provide ongoing support for the institute.
