Airfibre has agreed a partnership with Distributor The NextGen Group to provide the Palo Alto Networks’ cloud-based Next-Generation Firewall in Ireland.

Aimed at small to medium enterprise (SME), the services provides enterprise grade capability to smaller businesses "without the requirement for expensive hardware solutions", according to Airfibre. The managed enterprise security service is based within the cloud which, the provider says, has the additional benefit of protecting investment in last-mile, internet leased-line services.

"It suits our customers perfectly," said John Earley, CEO of Airfibre, "they do not have to invest in expensive hardware to avail of this service but can access the enterprise-strength security solution through the cloud and on a monthly fee."

"The traditional route to firewall security is to install dedicated hardware at a client facility, but there are many drawbacks, not least of which is keeping the firewall up to date. It is also a physical object and can suffer regular hardware failure quite outside of attack or incursions"

"We can provide companies with a flexible, workable solution to implementing social media policy," said Earley. "Depending on the company, there may be a need for employees to access some forms of social media, at different periods during the working day or working week. This is very easy to set up.

"Moreover, it is also just as easy to allow employees recreational access during breaks or of limited duration to be determined by the company. The beauty is that a company can specify its social media policy and implement it, without worrying about policing it."

Operating the firewall within the cloud brings an important benefit to users in that any attack on customer resources is cut off inside the cloud, according to Airfibre.  The downside to the traditional option of basing firewalls at the edge of customer premises is potential bandwidth reduction. An external firewall leaves customers open to the daily threat of valuable last-mile bandwidth being wasted by hostile attacks.

A monthly billing scheme that includes remote support enables customers to spread the cost of security and is designed to ensure that Airfibre’s Enterprise Security service is always cheaper than bringing security solutions in-house.
