Aer Arann, one of the world’s fastest growing regional airlines, with passenger numbers up from 30,000 in 1999 to just under one million in 2004, is running all of its commercial, financial and operations departments on Oracle databases deployed by Oracle partner, Traventec.
Established in 1970 to provide the first scheduled air service to the Aran Islands from Galway, Aer Arann now operates more than 400 scheduled flights each week on 25 routes – six domestic, 17 to the UK and two to Europe – covering a total of 20 destinations. It is now the biggest airline operating from Cork airport and the third biggest Irish airline operating out of Dublin airport, next to Ryanair and Aer Lingus.
‘A key part of our strategic plan was to ensure that our IT investment would support our business now and as we expand further into the future,’ said Micheal O’Callarain, marketing manager at Aer Arann. ‘Scalability, efficiency and flexibility were absolutely key to the future of our success as a business. We wanted to increase cost efficiencies and be able to deliver the highest levels of customer service, which Oracle and Traventec have enabled us to do.’
Aer Arann worked with Traventec to define its IT strategy. The Oracle database was then chosen to streamline the company’s end-to-end processes. Traventec also developed a Web application for the Aer Arann’s intranet using Java and Oracle technology to enable daily reporting of key management data.
‘Oracle offered the best in technology terms, having built up a long-standing reputation with a truly impressive customer base,’ said O’Callarain. ‘Traventec had a very good understanding of our business processes and a team that offered experience in the application of technology. We are very confident the investment we have made will provide us with a solid foundation to fuel our company’s business growth in the future.’
