Graphics software tends to be both expensive and complicated. However, Cosmic Blobs is an attempt to bring 3D graphics and animation to a wider audience

Launching Cosmic Blobs for the first time fires up a tutorial to guide you through the basics of creating your first blob (the term used to describe any 3D object created in the program).

There’s a browser window at the bottom of the screen that allows you to quickly select pre-designed shapes such as spheres, cones and cubes, as well as some more complex designs like animals and human figures. These make it easy to get started, as you can choose one of the ready-made blobs and experiment to get an idea of how the program works.

Created objects appear as though made of digital clay, and can be stretched, bent and prodded using the program’s simple modelling tools. The next step is to add colour and texture to the designs.
There’s also an animation mode with a series of simple effects such as running and jumping that are easily accessed from a list at the side of the screen.

It’s good fun to just experiment with the program for a while, although naturally the best results are only achieved by investing time and effort.

Even so, its ease of use and attractive price make Cosmic Blobs an ideal introduction to 3D graphics.
