A turn up for the Apple iBooks

Aimed at home and education users, Apple has given its iBook G4 series of notebooks a speed boost with onboard processors now running at up to 1.2GHz. With prices starting at EUR1,200, the new iBook G4 Series also includes support for wireless networking running at speeds of up to 54Mbit/sec, and Bluetooth for personal area networking.

The new 12- and 14in iBooks offer up to six hours of battery life for all-day mobile use in the classroom or on the road. Each iBook G4 offers ATI Mobility Radeon 9200 graphics with 32Mbyte of dedicated DDR memory and AGP 4X support for gaming and watching DVDs.

Each iBook G4 model is encased in polycarbonate and is designed to be durable with slot-load optical drives. All iBook G4 models also offer FireWire 400, USB 2.0 and Ethernet connectivity and a built-in 56k modem for dial-up Internet access. On the software front, the new notebooks bundle iLife 2004 includes iTunes for managing digital music, iPhoto for organising and sharing digital photos, iMovie for digital movie-making, iDVD for creating and burning Hollywood-style DVDs, and GarageBand, the new music application that turns a Mac into a professional-quality musical instrument and recording studio.

With prices starting at EUR1,800, Apple has also upgraded its Powerbook range of laptops aimed at business users. Both the 15in and 17in PowerBook G4s now offer up to a 1.5GHz PowerPC G4 processor and phenomenal graphics performance with the ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 graphics processor.

For users who want the highest graphics performance, the 1.5GHz 15in model and 17in PowerBook can now be configured with up to 128Mbyte of graphics memory. The new 12in PowerBook G4 features a 1.33GHz PowerPC processor, Nvidia GeForce FX Go5200 graphics with 64Mbyte of dedicated video memory and a
60Gbyte hard drive.
