The web browser on the Nintendo DS handheld games console will ship with filter
technology against inappropriate web content. The Nintendo DS Browser launches in Ireland on 6th October 2006 and enables Nintendo DS users to surf the Web. The filtering technology is being provided by Astaro Parental Control, a filter technology against illicit web content, serves as a “digital nanny”
for the popular hand-held games console and provides a family-safe environment for children that access the Internet.
By leveraging a list of 17 overall categories that range from pornography
and nudity to illegal drugs and weapons, Astaro Parental Control
effectively prevents children from viewing illicit material on the Internet from a Wi-Fi-connected DS console.
Astaro’s technology filters a volume of over 60 million classified web pages. Each time users request an uncategorised web page, Astaro¹s data processing centre automatically verifies and classifies the website within 48 hours. This process keeps the web filter up to date, while allowing for protection even against unknown and new web pages.
