Nvidia and Universal Music Group (UMG) are teaming up to develop ‘responsible AI’ applications for the music industry. The collaboration is designed to transform how music is discovered and created, and how fans interact with it, by harnessing UMG’s vast catalogue and Nvidia’s advanced AI technology.

At the heart of the partnership is Music Flamingo, Nvidia’s cutting-edge AI model that can listen to music, interpret it and reason about it with remarkable accuracy. By training Music Flamingo on UMG’s extensive library of more than 3 million tracks, the goal is to enable fans to discover new music based on emotional stories and cultural resonance, rather than relying solely on traditional genre or tempo classifications.

This deeper understanding of music will also benefit emerging artists by helping them connect with listeners who appreciate their unique sound. On top of that, Music Flamingo allows artists to analyse, describe and share their music with greater depth and insight.

Nvidia and UMG acknowledge the importance of ethical considerations in AI development and have committed to building these tools responsibly. They stress the need to protect artists’ work, ensure proper attribution and respect copyright law.

The partnership goes beyond fine-tuning Music Flamingo. It also focuses on creating innovative AI-powered music creation tools for artists. To make sure these tools empower musicians rather than churning out generic results, Nvidia and UMG are setting up a dedicated artist incubator.
