Linda Yaccarino announced Wednesday that she is stepping down as CEO of X, Elon Musk’s social media company, according to reports.

“When @elonmusk and I first spoke about his vision for X, I knew this would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company,” she wrote in a post on the platform.

“I am extremely grateful to him for trusting me to protect freedom of speech, reform the company, and transform X into the all-in-one app,” she added.

Yaccarino joined X in 2023 – then still called Twitter – about six months after Musk’s takeover of the platform. Before that, she worked at NBC Universal Media as chair of global advertising and partnerships.

As CEO, Yaccarino led X through major changes, such as the rebranding from Twitter to X, and various crises.

Many advertisers turned their backs on the platform after Musk’s takeover, when he relaxed content moderation rules and reinstated blocked accounts, including that of former President Trump.

Yaccarino tried to win back advertisers, but was sometimes frustrated in this by Musk himself. At the end of 2023, Musk lashed out at companies that had pulled their ads after discovering their commercials appeared alongside far-right content. It remains to be seen whether she left out of frustration.

Her departure comes as Musk is trying to integrate X with his AI company xAI. In March, he announced that xAI had acquired X in a $45 billion deal.
