TikTok is working on developing an American version of its app, called M2, which is expected to become available in Apple and Google app stores on 5 September 2025.

This version is a preparation for the planned sale of TikTok’s American operations to a group of US investors, a process that is reportedly in an advanced stage.

Users in the US will eventually have to switch to the new app to continue using the service. However, the current version is expected to remain functional until March 2026, although that deadline may still be adjusted.

The forced sale stems from US legislation which requires TikTok to choose between a sale or a ban.

President Trump previously extended ByteDance’s deadline to 17 September 2025, and the new app will be launched shortly before that date.

A consortium of non-Chinese companies – possibly including Oracle – reportedly wants to acquire TikTok US, with ByteDance retaining a minority stake. Final approval is required from both US and Chinese authorities.
