Instagram users worldwide are expressing frustration over a wave of sudden account bans, which they attribute to flaws in the platform’s AI-driven moderation system.
Since early June, many have been reporting that their accounts have been banned without warning or apparent reason. Attempts to appeal are often ignored, and contact with Meta has been difficult or remains completely absent. Some users have serious allegations thrown at them, such as sharing child abuse material, which directly affects their reputation and sometimes even their income.
The situation affects not only individual users, but also small business owners and influencers who depend on Instagram for their work. Some lost thousands of followers and potential income overnight.
A new AI system has supposedly been deployed that makes mistakes in assessing content or user behavior, causing accounts to be unfairly blocked. Not too long ago, the same thing happened at Facebook.
While there are signs that Meta is now trying to rectify the situation, it remains unclear to what extent human judgment plays a role in this.
Frustration over the lack of transparency and support is growing. On platforms like Reddit, users are sharing their experiences, which are often marked by silence from Meta. There are even sounds of a possible class action lawsuit against the parent company.
