Data released today from Amazon, to mark its 20th anniversary in Ireland, reveals it has invested over €22 billion in the country since 2004. In 2023 alone, the company invested over €3 billion to support customers, employees and communities across Ireland.

Over the last 20 years, Amazon has grown its commitment to Ireland, from its first office in Dublin, and Customer Service Centre in Cork, to Amazon Web Services (AWS) launching its first infrastructure region outside of the US in Ireland in 2007, and most recently a fulfilment centre (FC) in Baldonnell.

Next year, Amazon will be launching a new dedicated website, Amazon.ie, to offer Irish customers an experience they value most – a wide selection of over 100 million products, including even more from Irish businesses, with low prices, and fast and convenient deliveries and returns.

John Boumphrey, vice president, Amazon UK & Ireland, said: “As we celebrate 20 years of Amazon in Ireland, we are incredibly proud of the contribution we’ve made to the Irish economy. We have invested more than €22 billion during this time, with over €3 billion invested in 2023 alone. Ireland has created an environment that stimulates investment and, for us, that has meant creating jobs, boosting skills, building infrastructure and investing in the communities our employees live in and serve.”

Leo Clancy, CEO, Enterprise Ireland said: “Amazon’s 20-year anniversary in Ireland is a testament to the strength of our Irish enterprise ecosystem and talented workforce. Irish small and medium businesses have greatly benefited from accessing Amazon’s global marketplace, and AWS’s ongoing investment has enabled Irish firms to become world leaders in data centre construction. Enterprise Ireland welcomes Amazon’s continued investment and commitment to supporting entrepreneurial companies in Ireland to scale internationally.”

More than 1,000 Irish SMEs selling around 5.5 million products on Amazon in 2023 – with home, beauty, grocery and health and personal care proving to be the most popular categories. The launch of Amazon.ie will be great news for Irish SMEs, helping them reach a bigger audience, both at home and abroad. In 2023, Irish SMEs selling on Amazon recorded over €170 million in export sales, with over half of those (more than €100 million) in export sales outside the EU. More than 2,500 jobs have been created by these SMEs to support their business on Amazon.

AWS provides cloud services to thousands of Irish entities, including large businesses such as Ryanair, Bank of Ireland and Stripe. It has helped to create the country’s vibrant cloud infrastructure ecosystem and, with its highly-skilled technology-focused workforce, AWS sits at the heart of Ireland’s thriving digital economy.

Amazon employs around 6,500 people in Ireland.
