Automated Resource Manager from EMC is an open software product that automates the process of allocating storage resources.

By automating manual steps this reduces user errors and ensures that each application receives the storage it needs based on business requirements.

The package is part of EMC’s Controlcentre family of integrated storage management software. It defines and applies storage service-levels for specific application requirements.

Automated Resource Manager is compatible with both EMC and non-EMC storage devices including EMC Symmetrix, EMC CLARiiON, and Hewlett-Packard StorageWorks. Additional third-party support is in development.

Simple requests for additional storage can be performed in minutes by a single person. The allocation procedure works by user-set policies that support specific business needs. Policy options can be set for type of storage, RAID level, replication parameters, or number of paths between server and storage.

For example, customers can assign demanding applications such as On-Line Transaction Processing (OLTP) the highest levels of storage performance and availability, and assign other service levels to less-critical applications.

The new software can also allocate and manage heterogeneous storage pools based on geography, application and functional organisation.
