SkipDr Automax

CDs and DVDs are susceptible to scratches, which is annoying for audio discs but can be potentially catastrophic with data discs. The SkipDr Automax repairs discs by polishing the disc to remove the worst scratches.

The Automax comes with a fluid for lubricating the CD while it is being polished and a cloth to polish the CD afterwards. It is powered by batteries or a mains power adapter, although one isn’t supplied. One advantage of this over manual versions is that it automatically ejects the disc, avoiding the risk of the user wearing away too much of the disc.

We tested the Automax with several CDs. The first had been purposefully scratched so that the computer could no longer read it. A session in the SkipDr did not remove all the scratches but the CD did then work without any problems. It also successfully repaired an audio CD that was skipping on many tracks.

Ultimately, the Automax cannot work miracles. If the actual data layer is damaged, the information contained on that area is lost forever. There is a also a limited amount of plastic to polish to remove scratches.

Verdict 3 stars

Those with lots of scratched discs will find the Automax useful.
