Despite a slight improvement over two years, a survey has reported that 43% of Irish organisations have no disaster recovery plan.
The survey carried out by IT service provider, MJ Flood and CA, suggests that “Irish organisations are risking business-critical information loss, by failing to implement disaster recovery planning and best practice in data backup.”
Perhaps worse than the 43% without a DR plan, is the 54% of this group who have no plans to develop one.
When compared with a similar survey in 2007, the results reveal a slight improvement in the quality of practices, says the survey report. However, many organisations remain exposed to the potential of significant business disruption and loss of revenue due to the absence of proper disaster recovery planning and the use of flawed backup processes.
“Data is the currency of the knowledge economy and senior executives have a corporate responsibility to ensure that it is backed up to best practice and stored securely,” comments James Finglas, managing director, MJ Flood Technology. “Companies are clearly ignoring the requirement to put in place proper disaster recovery and business continuity planning and they fail to understand the critical nature of these activities. This is starkly illustrated by the fact that a staggering 48% said that their business can tolerate a systems outage of at least one day or more.”
