Microsoft and Nokia will later today announce a strategic alliance which is expected to see support for Office 2010 Web Apps on Nokia smartphones.
The companies are due to make an announcement this afternoon, in which the rivals will outline their plans for collaboration on mobile devices.
Both Windows Mobile and Nokia’s Symbian have been left in the shadows by the emergence of the iPhone, Google’s Android and Palm’s Web OS. Today’s announcement may give businesses a reason to stick with the Symbian platform, while helping Microsoft to fend off the challenge of Google’s online apps.
Microsoft has already demonstrated its Office 2010 Web Apps running on Windows Mobile handsets. Today’s announcement is expected to extend the reach to Symbian S60, allowing Nokia smartphone owners to read and edit documents on the move.
Microsoft’s Office 2010 Web Apps will include browser-based versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Although Microsoft has released a beta version of Office 2010, the Web Apps have yet to be unleashed on beta testers.
The company has promised that consumers will be given free access to the Web Apps, even if they haven’t purchased the desktop software.
