Brains and brawn: DCU’s beefed up network will benefit 11,000 users
Motorola Solutions is supplying Dublin City University’s 35 hectare campus with a wireless service intended to improve the broadband experience of over 11,000 students and staff.
The university is upgrading its wireless network to cope with growing student numbers and to extend wireless capabilities to the libraries and canteens. The upgrade is aimed at avoiding congestion in popular working areas.
The university also wanted a system that could support its education roaming network facility. This gives staff, students and researchers from partnering institutions internet connectivity across campus and while visiting other institutions by simply opening their laptops.
DCU is also setting up 165 Motorola AP 650 multi-purpose access points to provide constant wireless security and let IT administrators troubleshoot network performance issues remotely from any location.
DCU’s networks manager, James Healy, notes: “The capacity balancing functionality of the Motorola WiNG 5 WLAN solution was a big pull for us, and gives our IT department more agility and peace of mind.”
