Mobile phone operator 3 has launched a suite of mobile Internet services called X-Series that brings Internet, phone and TV services to mobile phones for a flat monthly fee. For the first time in Ireland, mobile phone Internet access will replicate the established home broadband pricing model, with X-Series customers paying a monthly fee for access.
3’s new service model puts an end to the per megabyte pricing used by other Irish networks. X-Series brings Internet and TV services, as well as home PC access, to users for a flat monthly fee. This unlimited Internet access from their mobiles will allow X-Series users to make calls to other Skype users worldwide, whether they’re using Skype on X-series phones, PCs or other Skype-enabled devices.
All X-Series products offer free Skype – to Skype calls at the point of use, which 3 says will change the way Irish consumers use mobile internet services. X Series is available in two packages. X-Series Gold costs €19.99, while X-Series Silver costs €14.99 a month. Both packages offer unlimited Internet access on the move, and free Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world. Gold Users will also be able to watch their home television on their mobile and access their home PC files remotely. The Gold package also offers access to Slingbox and Orb – innovative services that allow home TV and what’s stored on home PCs to be accessed and viewed on mobiles. Unlimited Windows Live Messenger and access to eBay are also included with both Pay Monthly price plans. Other services include podcasting from Mobilcast, mobile mail, Windows Live Messenger, remote access to files via Orb and access to home TV through Sling Media. Robert Finnegan, managing director of 3, said: “The X-Series is mobile internet as it was meant to be – unlimited access and free at the point of use. Moving away from charges per call, per megabyte and per message will set consumers free to enjoy mobile internet services without having to think about what it’s costing. So if you’re an X-Series customer with 3, your Skype calls, instant messaging, emailing, and internet searching won’t cost you another cent.”
“Customers are not just searching on the Internet now, they are using their broadband connections to take advantage of innovative services like Skype and Windows Live Messenger,” said Susan Branchflower, head of marketing for 3. We’ve embraced this trend and moved quickly to ensure that consumers can have the same choices when they’re out and about on a night out as they would at home on their PC. The massive uptake for Windows Live Messenger on 3 in Ireland has shown just how significant mobile internet services are in the Irish market and X-Series is the next big step.”
X-Series is available via 3Stores, online at www.three.ie/xseries and or by calling 1800 330 333. It is available on the Nokia N73, 6120 and E65 handsets with others being rolled out in coming months.
