Xilinx Ireland has been named overall winner in the multinational category of the inaugural US-Ireland Research Innovation Awards.

The Awards, jointly presented by the American Chamber of Commerce Ireland and The Royal Irish Academy, recognise excellence in research innovation that has taken place on the island of Ireland as a result of US foreign direct investment.

Using the most advanced semiconductor technologies, the Xilinx Ireland engineering team designed a new class of programmable microchip enabling breakthrough power reduction and massively increased computational performance.

The microchip is reconfigurable by electronics manufacturers to their needs, reducing costs and time to market. Initial applications will include next generation mobile communications equipment and portable ultrasound devices for advanced medical diagnostics. This new invention has so far yielded three patents granted with multiple patents pending.

Xilinx established its Dublin operation in 1995, where it 300 people across development, engineering, supply, finance, legal and HR functions.  Xilinx also has a presence in Cork and Belfast.

Kevin Cooney, managing director of Xilinx EMEA and global chief information officer, said: “This award affirms the innovative and research driven approach that we have fostered throughout our organisation. Xilinx devices enable developers to create higher performance systems, products and technologies. They are at the forefront of all technical advances anywhere in the world today. This award is a great tribute to the skills and achievements of our people here in Ireland who contribute so strongly to the wider global success of our corporation.”
