Ireland’s winning entries for the world’s biggest photography competition, Wiki Loves Monuments, have been revealed.

Organised by the Wikimedia Community, the competition aims to raise awareness of national monuments and create a crowd-sourced bank of quality photos that will be free to use for education. This is the first year the competition has been run in Ireland.

Over 2,000 entries were received and these were judged by a five-person expert panel. Ten winning photos were picked, featuring monuments from nine counties.

Awards were presented at an event in the City Assembly House run by the Irish Georgian Society in Dublin. The competition in Ireland is being supported by The Department of Arts, Heritage & the Gaeltacht, National Heritage Week, The Heritage Council of Ireland, The Office of Public Works, Open Knowledge Ireland and Dimension Data.

The judges were Monika Chmierlaz, photoeditor of Blow Photo Magazine; Ian Doyle, head of conservation at The Heritage Council; Kate Horgan, award-winning photojournalist and photoeditor; Darius Whelan, public lead for Creative Commons Ireland; and Ken Williams, photographer of prehistoric monuments and megalithic art.
