Third quarter results for UPC released today showed an overall increase in subscriptions to its Phone, TV and broadband services up 65,200 to a total of 1,105,200 – up 6% on the same perdiod last year.

Broadband subscriptions totalled 359,100, up 9% on the same quarter last year and phone subscriptions rose 21% to 336,300. Digital cable TV subscriptions continued their slide, however, from 414,800 in the second quarter of 2014 to 335,800 in the third. This ongoing decline could be attributed to competition from Sky in sports and the increased popularity of ‘chord cutting’ where users are foresaking broadcast TV in favour of online alternatives like Netflix and RTE Player. UPC’s own Horizon on-demand platform passed the 100,000 user mark during the quarter.

Carol Grennan, chief financial officer of UPC Ireland, said: “We are pleased to report a third successive quarter of growth in subscriptions during 2014. Our investment in excess of €1 billion has brought our network to over 850,000 premises in 20 main cities and towns nationwide.

“Half of all Irish homes can receive UPC’s 200mb/s broadband speed and businesses including SMEs are being offered tailor made speeds of up to 500mb/s and additional valuable business products to address their needs.”
