Three Irish researchers are to receive supports under the newly established Royal Society-Science Foundation Ireland University Research Fellowship. A total of 38 awards were issued under this first round.
The recipients, who will be funded by Science Foundation Ireland, are Dr Lynette Keeney of the Tyndall National Institute; Dr Jonathan Mackey of Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies; and Dr Pauline Scanlan of University College Cork.
The University Research Fellowship programme aims to provide outstanding scientists, who have the potential to become leaders in their chosen fields, with the opportunity to build an independent research career. The programme is extremely competitive and recipients are expected to be strong candidates for permanent posts in universities at the end of their fellowships.
“I want to congratulate the three young researchers on achieving success in this highly prestigious and competitive programme,” said Prof Mark Ferguson, Director General of Science Foundation Ireland and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Government of Ireland (pictured). “It clearly demonstrates the high quality and potential of junior Irish researchers. This programme provides important support for early career researchers and the successful fellows have the potential to develop into Ireland’s research leaders of tomorrow.”
