The vast majority of Irish technology professionals (85%) believe that they will change jobs at least every five years for the rest of their careers, while more than 80% believe they will move within the next 12 months.

These are some of the headline findings from a survey by the organiser of the Career Zoo career networking event.

According to the survey, salary was ranked last out of 12 possible considerations when looking for a new job.

Tech professionals, in the survey of more than 200 respondents, rated family-friendly policies, opportunities to travel and a physical workspace that is attractive and enjoyable to work in as the three most important factors to consider when seeking a new position.

Some 43% of survey respondents believe that Brexit will have repercussions for their career, while almost 30% believe the European Commission’s recent ruling on Apple’s tax affairs in Ireland will impact their careers.

“The majority of those who completed our survey are highly experienced tech professionals: 45% are in the 32 to 40 age-bracket, and half have more than five years’ experience in the sector,” said Jackie Slattery, director, Career Zoo. “Because of their in-demand skills and experience levels, tech professionals place less value on pay-scales than other workplace factors. Essentially, they know they can attract a decent salary. As a result, what they consider important when assessing a potential new employer are factors like family-friendly policies, travel opportunities, an enjoyable work environment, generous levels of annual leave, and flexible work options, such as remote working and flexible hours.”
