Sony has said sales of its PlayStation 4 console have sold more than 5.3 million units as of 8 February 2014. The figure shows consistent deman following the Christmas season, where it was reported that total Sales of the PS4 were 4.2 million users. This compares favourably against its lead competitor the Xbox One which, according to a report in Gamespot, has sold 3 million units.

Further bad news for Microsoft’s next-gen console reported last week has shown that in the US Sony’s machine was outselling it in a ratio of 2:1.

Both consoles were launched in November 2013, the PS4 stealing a march on its rival by a week. While the Xbox One went for a global launch, the PS4 has stalled its rollout, arriving on the shelves in Japan on 22 February 2014.

Sony is winning on the hardware front for now but Amazon UK’s Ketu Patel, speaking to gaming publication Edge, said the gap could be closed when the catalogue of games available to both machines broadens.

One title that could prove pivotal is EA’s new first-person shooter Titanfall, which crashed Microsoft’s Live servers when a beta version went online last week.
