The town of Skibereen in Co Cork has been selected by ESB-Vodafone joint venture Siro as one of two testing areas for the second wave of the its fibre-to-the-home network rollout.

Skibereen was selected as a small to medium sized town to be connected. A second test site of a smaller rural area will be announced over the coming weeks. Both trials will begin next year and will inform the decision to include specific areas in the rollout’s second phase.

Siro has also been selected to provide connectivity to Ludgate Hub an initiative in Skibbereen, which aims to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem in the West Cork region.

Sean Atkinson, CEO, Siro, said: “This pilot opportunity will allow us to investigate the potential of whether to proceed with a second phase of our 100% fibre network roll-out to smaller towns nationwide and we look forward to getting feedback from pilot participants in Skibbereen.”

Siro is rolling out its network to 50 large regional towns nationwide, with construction work already underway in Dundalk, Co Louth.
