Nominations have opened for this year’s Silver Surfers Awards. The competitoin, organised by Age Action, searches for people over the age of 50 who are getting online and mastering new technologies.

Nominations are being sought in five categories:

  • New to IT: A person over the age of 50 who is new to technology
  • Hobbies on the Net: An older person who uses the internet to pursue their passion or hobby
  • IT tutor(s) of the year: An individual or group of any age who provides voluntary support to older learners
  • Silver Surfer: An older person who embraces the internet or technology with a sense of fun and adventure
  • Golden IT: An individual over the age of 80 who uses technology to enhance their life

“Last year we had more nominations than ever before and we hope to top this in 2015,” said Eamon Timmins, CEO, Age Action. “The Silver Surfer awards are a great way to show an older relative or friend your appreciation and we’re urging everyone right across Ireland who knows a great silver surfer to nominate them.

“We hope they will inspire other older people to take the plunge and to get online.”

Nominees will be invited to an awards ceremony on 20 October at The Helix in DCU, organised by the DCU Age Friendly Project.

Nominations can be made online at www.ageaction.ie/silversurfer. The deadline for entries is 4 October 2015.
