SAP’s co-founder Klaus Tschira has died unexpectedly at the age of 74, the German software vendor has said.

Tschira left IBM in 1972 along with four of his colleagues, Hasso Plattner, Dietmar Hopp, Hans-Werner Hector and Claus Wellendreuther to form what became Europe’s largest technology company.

Today, SAP employs approximately 75,000 people, although it has recently announced job cuts, and has a turnover of almost €17 billion.

Tschira, estimated to be worth €7 billion dollars, stepped down from SAP in 2007, but his colleague Plattner is still the vendor’s chairman.

Klaus’ passion for science and mathematics extended to several of his charities, in which he helped young talents to enter the field.
