Oracle has signed an agreement to acquire Front Porch Digital, a provider of technology for migrating, managing and monetising large-scale media content.

The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Oracle said late Sunday that it expects the transaction to be closed this year. Front Porch Digital will continue to operate as an independent company until then.

Front Porch in Lafayette, Colorado, helps manage over 750Pb of data for its over 550 customers that include companies in media and entertainment, government agencies, and sports organisations. Besides the BBC, the US Library of Congress, the European Parliament and NASCAR use technology from Front Porch Digital. The acquisition could help Oracle sell its own technologies such as database, engineered systems, servers and storage to address the high-performance needs of the rich media market.

The combination of Oracle with Front Porch is expected to create an enterprise-grade cloud and on-premise content storage management offering to help organisations manage the migration, integration, storage, and delivery of rich media content, Oracle said.

Front Porch’s offerings include the DIVASolutions content storage management system, Lynx cloud-based content management system and Samma media migration technology.

Oracle said it plans to optimise Front Porch Digital solutions with its own technologies, “while maintaining the technology-agnostic profile” of Front Porch offerings. After the transaction is closed, Oracle plans to make “significant engineering investments” in Front Porch Digital’s content storage management solutions, to help deliver features and innovations to customers more rapidly, it added.
