O2 has launched a new mobile contactless couponing pilot in the ‘Silicon Docklands’ area of Dublin. O2 Docklands Deals enables customers of any phone network to redeem special discounts and promotional offers in 50 participating retailers using their iPhone or Android smartphones

To use the service consumers download the O2 Docklands Deals application from the iPhone App store or Google Play. They can then search through available offers and save the relevant coupons to their phone, enabling it to act as a virtual mobile wallet. The consumer then redeems the offer in participating stores by tapping their phone over a specially installed ‘pod’, connected near to or into the till, which is provided by 2ergo plc, and which uses WiFi connectivity for the contactless redemption.

Eugene Mitchell, marketing and innovation director at Telefónica Ireland, said: "Docklands Deals is a fantastic example of how O2 is developing new tools and services to improve the functionality of mobiles in consumers’ daily lives. It also marks another step along the journey of making the mobile wallet a reality with mobile loyalty cards and payments to follow."

O2 Docklands Deals follows on from the announcement earlier this month that O2 has partnered with Easytrip to launch a new Charge2Mobile toll payment service. The first of its kind, the service will provide a more convenient channel for paying tolls on the M50 for car drivers who currently pay by cash. Easytrip’sCharge2Mobile Tolls service allows car drivers who use the M50 and all other Irish toll plazas to pay their tolls through their pre-pay or bill pay O2 mobile account.
