If the latest leaked video of Windows 9 is any indication, advocates of a unified messaging feature in Windows 9 will be getting their wish.

A video, posted to YouTube by WinFuture on Saturday (shown below), shows a new unified notification center that appears in the lower right of the screen when you click a taskbar button. The notification center appears to work in conjunction with Windows’ existing ‘toast’ notifications and lets you see a rollup of recent notifications from all apps.

It’s not that dissimilar in concept from notification systems in Android, iOS, and OS X: It groups notifications by app, and lets you scroll down to see more messages. A Close All button lets you dismiss all notifications with a single click, but you can also dismiss notifications one by one if you like.

The video is the latest in a series of leaks regarding Microsoft’s next desktop OS. On Friday, WinFuture published a video showing multiple desktops built in to Windows 9.
It’s unclear how much control you’ll have over what appears in the notification center, how many notifications it shows, and so on. We might not have to wait too much longer to find out, though: Reports indicate that Microsoft will release a Technical Preview of Windows 9 – or whatever Microsoft decides to call it – in the next month or two.
