A Ladbrokes survey carried out by OnePoll of 500 Irish organisations on workplace habits has found, unsurprisingly, that personal email and social media are costing Irish businesses in lost productivity.

The survey found that more than 1 in 10 (11.4%) workers spend between 20 and 60 minutes per day on Facebook. Twitter also figures but is not as commonly used, with just 4.4% in the same usage band.

However, both of these are surpassed by personal email where the same usage band represents 14%.

When the results are taken as a whole, 18.6% of employees use Twitter at work, with half using Facebook and more than three quarters (78%) processing personal emails.

Interestingly, the survey said that while 13% of respondents said that their employer allowed them to watch World Cup matches during work time, 80% said it was not allowed, but 7% said they did anyway.

Workplace taboos were also explored with slacking off cited, somewhat surprisingly, by more than half (59%) as among the worst, followed by hygiene issues (50%), poor punctuality (48%) and ‘brown-nosing’ (34%).
