A magic lantern show, a Nigerian gospel choir and a music for the deaf workshop are amongst the highlights of the Irish Research Council’s Culture Night programme taking place tomorrow night from 5-10pm at Boston College on Dublin’s St Stephen’s Green.

Younger fans of Culture Night will appreciate the family-friendly nature of the activities on offer, including face-painting throughout the evening and storytelling workshops.

There will also be Scribblebot workshops aimed at introducing young people to science, technology, art and design.

For older culture-lovers, there will be a range of performances, demonstrations and interactive talks led by researchers funded by the Irish Research Council.

Schedule highlights include:

  • A discussion on and demonstration of modern Ethiopian dance, led by researcher Ras Mikey Courtney
  • A recreation of Haddon the Headhunter’s 1890 magic lantern show about the Aran Islands
  • A workshop on music for deaf audiences, led by researcher George Higgs, who will demonstrate how all musical experience involves a ‘sense ensemble’
  • ‘Queering in the Years’ – a workshop exploring how Ireland’s gay community has been represented in the media over the past 40 years
  • A medley of gospel songs performed by the Yoruba Gospel Choir
  • A performance of traditional Irish music by concertina-player Jack Talty, who will also discuss how his work as a professional musician complements his research on music-teaching

Prof Jane Ohlmeyer, chairperson of the Irish Research Council, said: “Since the beginning of 2016, the Irish Research Council has been running the #LoveIrishResearch campaign, which is aimed at connecting members of the public with the amazing work being conducted by Irish-based researchers and highlighting their achievements across multiple fields.

“Culture Night is a perfect platform to bring the public into direct contact with our talented researchers, and to demonstrate the important work they are doing in the arts and humanities.”
