The introduction of computer coding courses for secondary schools received a boost following the announcement of a collaborative initiative between Intel Ireland, Lero – The Irish Software Research Centre – and Junior Cycle for Teachers (JCT) to provide 19 post-primary schools with hardware and online support services.

The project is designed to support schools and teachers in exploring the coding short course now available under the Framework for Junior Cycle 2015.

Intel Ireland donated 900 Galileo Gen 2 Boards and teacher kits to a cohort of 19 post-primary schools. Students will engage in technology and design-related activities with the use of these resources within this 12-month project.

Tailored training and online support will be provided to teachers by the JCT Support Service, with the support of Lero and Intel.

Clare McInerney, education & outreach manager, Lero (pictured) said: “This project will allow students to see how interesting and creative a career in computing can be. This initiative will enable students to make informed choices about their future studies in the field of computing.“

The 19 schools for this initiative were chosen from over 120 entries from post-primary schools from all sectors, and participating teachers will receive two days of initial training, and further online and regional support.

Further information on this initiative can be found at the JCT website www.jct.ie.
