It’s undisputed that the technology enabling cloud has been around for quite some time. In my opinion, it has become the norm rather than the unusual and not only for financial software but in any sector. Economies of scale and the decreasing cost of data servers have been driving overall costs down, making cloud computing more affordable for SMEs and allowing for much more accessibility and efficiency between connected devices.

Spotlight_SmallHerbst Software has recently developed new applications that run on Android platforms, unifying ERP with REST (API) interfaces that allow for third party applications that can run natively or through HTML. Herbst Software acknowledges the need for portable and mobile solutions for financial software, and is working towards more a ubiquitous solution that eliminates paperwork and provides accessibility to the main system on the go.

User experience has evolved alongside technology and consumers’ wants and needs, and the fact of the matter is functionality is still front and centre. With Big Data, the increasing amount of information available to a business can be handled within a well-designed ERP system. The greatest technical challenge is to facilitate work around the constraints of the country’s infrastructure, with at least 10% of businesses unable to support a standard reliability rate of 99.8%. Being able to facilitate our customers through offline as well as online is imperative, and I believe a hybrid of both cloud and conventional architecture is still essential for any financial software system.
